3D Mammography

Scott County Hospital offers the latest state-of-the-art digital mammography technology including 3D tomosynthesis. Our staff of mammography professionals strive to make your experience easy, convenient and as comfortable as possible.

When it comes to breast cancer, early diagnosis improves a woman's chance for complete recovery. 3D mammography is a highly advanced technology that helps find very small cancers or rule out "false positives" and reduce the number of women who are called back for a diagnostic mammogram. Instead of viewing all the complexities of the breast in a flat image, the radiologist can examine the tissue a millimeter at a time. Fine details are more clearly visible and less likely to be hidden by the tissue above or below.

During the exam, compression is applied and the x-ray arm sweeps over the breast, acquiring multiple images of the breast at various angles and then takes a 2D image prior to release of compression. Computer software then creates very thin 3D reconstructed images in addition to the 2D images for the radiologist to review.
